What Gets Brought Into The Room

Sound, Booth, Lighting And The Spare Things Nobody Sees

A standard Amazing Tonigh disco arrives as a complete operated set-up: main speakers sized for the room, a clean DJ booth, laptop and controller system, dance floor lighting, microphone, power distribution, taped or ramped cable runs where needed and the small repair box that stops a loose plug becoming the story of the night.

For weddings, Mark will normally plan the room around the first dance, speeches and the point where guests start moving from tables to the floor. Lighting is kept useful rather than frantic. There is enough movement to lift a room, but not the strobe-heavy look that makes grandparents and venue managers nervous.

Pete looks after the practical checks: back-up speakers, labelled leads, spare fuses, PAT labels and the habit of packing a second microphone even when the first one worked perfectly at home. Public liability insurance is held to £10 million and PAT records are available to venues on request.

Mark’s note

Mark On The Part Guests Do Not Notice

People sometimes think the job is mainly pressing play, talking loudly and owning lights that move. The better nights are the opposite. Most of the work is done before the first song: checking the finish time against the licence, knowing where the speeches sit, having the first dance edited properly, reading the age range from the request list, finding out whether the venue has a sound limiter and leaving enough time to bring the kit in without barging through guests in suits. Once the room is full, I try to talk only when it helps. A good disco should not feel like someone showing off over the top of your family. It should feel like the room found its own pace, from the early Motown and indie requests to the last half hour when the aunties, mates from work and cousins have somehow agreed on the same song.
